Sinking of HMS Inverilien 1943
At 02.57 hours on 3 Feb, 1943, the Inverilen (Master Joseph Mann) in convoy HX-224 was torpedoed by U-456 south of Iceland. The tanker was abandoned and sank later in 56°13N/20°35W. The master, 24 crew members and six gunners were lost. 14 crew members and two passengers (DBS) were picked up by the HMS Asphodel (K 56) (Lt G.L. Fraser) and landed at Londonderry.
U-456 was chased after the attack by the HMS Londonderry (U 76), which had to abort the chase after she was damaged by a premature detonation of one of her own depth charges.

Sub Lieutenant Russell Bell is the tall Man on the right (thanks to Michelle Hackstetter). He died aboard the Asphodel and would have been 21 on the 2nd April 1944. He sent Michelle a series of photos of the sinking Inverilen. Michells says "I did not knowthe name of the ship as during the war it was censored information"
Feel free to use these photos for private use or study but please contact me before publishing them.
